The next morning a waiver was obtained to go through Madagascar airspace without HF radio since we had
the satellite phone. Maputo Control gave us the same waiver while en route.
Arriving at Maputo, Mozambique was a disappointment. The terminal was filthy and disorganized. The
only good happening was our meeting two South African pilots. Their advice was to get whatever
necessary done in Johannesburg, if we were hoping to cross the South Atlantic, where HF is essential
and required. The second airport at Lanseria was highly recommended because they cater to general
aviation. We took their advice and notified
Skyplan
of our change in itinerary.
A night in Maputo's Ibis Hotel was no bargain at $42.
