The next morning a waiver was obtained to go through Madagascar airspace without HF radio since we had the satellite phone. Maputo Control gave us the same waiver while en route.

Arriving at Maputo, Mozambique was a disappointment. The terminal was filthy and disorganized. The only good happening was our meeting two South African pilots. Their advice was to get whatever necessary done in Johannesburg, if we were hoping to cross the South Atlantic, where HF is essential and required. The second airport at Lanseria was highly recommended because they cater to general aviation. We took their advice and notified Skyplan of our change in itinerary.

A night in Maputo's Ibis Hotel was no bargain at $42.
